Build management dashboard reports using Microsoft’s SSAS KPIs
The built-in recognition of SSAS KPIs allows you to build a management dashboard
report with a few mouse clicks.
KPIs are selected from the field list and automatically added to the report:
Adding an analysis hierarchy, for example organisations, creates a drillable report
with just 5 mouse clicks:
Advanced query features
The primary goal for the design of the Intelligencia Investigator was to make the
most commonly used features very easy to access. This has not however been at the
expense of flexibility as the tool is also packed with features for the more advanced
user such as:
- Asymmetric queries (Support for multiple sub-queries)
- Include and Exclude member selection
- Visual Totals
- Large dimension support

The unique (patent pending) spreadsheet calculation engine within the Investigator
allows end users to add calculated rows, columns and cells to a query without having
to understand Mdx metadata expressions.
The interface clearly links the calculation expression to the data being displayed.
This overcomes the issue of Mdx expressions using metadata references that are not
displayed in the query grid. These metadata expressions are very long which makes
the interpretation of Mdx Queries difficult and prone to errors. The following query
that contains a calculation for expenses as a percentage of total explains this:

Intelligencia Investigator describes the formula for “Percentage of Total” as:

The Mdx expression for this calculation is:

Within this example you can see how difficult it is to read the Mdx expression and
how its elements do not readily relate to the display grid*. This calculation uses
only 2 “values”. Spreadsheet mode calculations make more complex business expressions
easy to create and maintain.
* Note: It is possible to make use of the display
captions within an Mdx expression, for example the expression [Department].[Departments].&[1]
Could be written as [Department].[Departments].[Corporate] This makes the Mdx slightly
easier to read, albeit even longer but breaks best practice in that the captions
for members could be changed thus causing the query to fail.
Business Advantages
The spreadsheet calculation interface is ideal for applications requiring flexible
ad-hoc query building and brings the following business advantages:
- Reduces the potential for calculation errors
- Queries can be built by business domain specialists rather than IT programmers
- Remove the reliance on data extraction to stand-alone tools
- Improves the auditability of existing queries by providing a simple human readable
expression language
